Jeff, what do you think of the situation regarding Joel Porter? Apparently, he wants a three year deal and he has signed for some Aussie side, then we're giving him a new contract.
Darren
Jeff's reply:
This is a very difficult one. I can understand a player wanting security but unless a club is paying a
large transfer fee, three year contracts do not appear to be the norm in the lower divisions. Indeed, one year deals are
more likely, certainly in League Two.
He has every right to sign a pre-contract with another club if his present
deal runs out in July but unless it is for personal reasons, you have to question the desire of someone wishing to
play in an Aussie side rather than in League One.
I would have thought a two year deal is appropriate for him as he still has a lot to offer but if Danny can get someone else in who is going to improve the team, then perhaps he should just go for it.
The club have made him an offer that shows they want him to stay - it's now very much up to the player.
Question Two:
Jeff, what do you make of the play-offs? I think they are a great way to end the season but do refs enjoy them as much as the fans do? Would they rather be off
on holiday?
Mark
Jeff's reply:
I think the play-offs are brilliant as without them, the last few weeks of the season would be pointless in most divisions.
From a ref's point of view, there are very few plum appointments at the end of a season. The play-offs give officials more chances of officiating big games and three chances to ref at Wembley. They make money, add excitement and prolong the season etc etc etc.
The only people who moan about them are the fans of those teams whose League position is higher than the team who eventually wins through. It's a point, I know, but everyone knows the score at the beginning of the season. They are here to stay.
Question Three:
What has been the worst game you've ever refereed in terms of football, not refereeing? You must have thought that you could have done better in some of the matches
you've officiated in.
Les
Jeff's reply:
I recall a night game at Wrexham against Cambridge. It was a nothing game, it was absolutely pissing down and it
was obvious nobody wanted to be there. It was just a case of laying back and thinking of England. To make matters
worse, I had Darren Ferguson, son of Sir Alex, whinging on in my ear all night.
